Kabardino-Balkaria readies to resume tungsten production in 2021

NALCHIK, Nov 18 (PRIME) -- Construction of buildings and facilities to resume production and processing at the Tyrnyauz tungsten-molybdenum field in the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria will start in April–June 2021, the region’s head said in a statement late on Tuesday.

“In accordance with the document, construction of buildings and facilities and construction of road infrastructure will start in the second quarter of 2021. The launch of new production is scheduled for the end of 2023,” the statement read.

President Vladimir Putin ordered the government to resume production at the Tyrnyauz field in 2016. The project’s total cost exceeds 27 billion rubles. The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, the North Caucasus Affairs Ministry, state industrial corporation Rostec, and Wolfram Company plan to create a facility for deep processing of tungsten-bearing raw materials in the North Caucasus Federal District.

In 2018, Rostec’s subsidiary Elbrus Mining Company won an auction for development of the Tyrnyauz field. The company evaluated reserves of the field and developed a feasibility study. A beneficiation plant and a hydrometallurgical plant at the field will have a production capacity of up to 4,500 tonnes of tungsten oxide.
